college closure - bob devine's statement.

It stunned all of us at the College as well. We only learned this "plan" at 2pm this afternoon. No-one was involved in the decision-making other than University administrators and the Board of Trustees. The only College rep was the President who was trying to sell a merger with McGregor as a way to deal with the financial situation. No conversations, no consultation, no consideration of alternatives. As I understand it, the Trustees did not have a lot of time to consider this plan, did not have alternative plans on the table, did not consult with major donors (who might have helped close some of the fiscal gaps), the faculty, the Alumni Board, the students or the Village. Reading between the lines, it seems to me that the University, in consultation with a few Trustees, had decided on this course of action long before the Board meeting.

The Trustees forced a "Renewal Plan" on the College several years ago, to move the College beyond "incremental growth". As Joe Cali would say, "The Idea Boys are working overtime...." They gave us five years to implement it, and promised the resources for the transition. The faculty worked their butts off, speeding up the implementation by a year. We're now two years into the plan, but the Board has not contributed nor raised the funds for this transition, so they're pulling the plug. The faculty did their part in attempting to implement what was essentially a bad plan, and did so with modest success. The Board failed in their stewardship role, and did not provide the 5-years of support for the transition. And so we have a Board that (a) rolled the dice with the College's legacy and all of our livelihoods in an "all or nothing" Renewal plan of dubious merit, (b) failed to support its own imposed plan or to raise sufficient money to implement it, and (c) seeing the results of the Plan in terms of recruitment and retention, precipitously decided that closing the College -- rather than raising additional funding, closing another campus, liquidating the endowment, merging the College & McGregor, etc. etc. -- was the only avenue to deal with the financial difficulties.

The other notable dimension of this story is that since 1999 the University has been focused on usurping College resources, first by pursuing policy changes that made it impossible for the College to break even and then by framing the College as a constant financial problem in the minds of the Trustees. As a result, the Trustees have removed more and more autonomy and decision-making from the College President (while gutting the systems of shared governance), and have given the University more and more discretion for fiscal and programmatic control. The University has used that control to raid College resources and consolidate their hold on the College and its directions. A "reorganization" eliminated the College's own VP of Finance and Administration and HR and moved them across the street. Likewise, Technology Resources was dissolved on the College side of the street and the College is now served by an IT department that reports to the McGregor School. This latest move is a logical next step. The University will walk away with Glen Helen, AEA, the campus and all its buildings, the endowment and the brand, while getting rid of all those pesky, critical, and "toxic" students.

As for re-opening in 2012, that's probably either a fantasy or a fig leaf.. It's a nice thing to say when you're closing the doors and putting 160 people out of work, but my sense is that IF the College closes (and I'm optimistic enough to believe that is not yet a given if people rally support and press contacts and bring appropriate pressure to bear) it will be closing its doors for good. If the College could not raise money to keep its doors open, why would be believe that it could raise the sort of money required for a ground-up re-invention -- including a new high-tech physical plant????? If Antioch College re-opens, my prediction is that it will be a shallowly normed version of what the adult campuses are doing, NOT an institution that bears the legacy of the College.

My 2 cents.

Sorry for this blatant plug for my new business, but since I am finally returning to the roots of my Antioch Visual Arts studies, I hope you won't mind :)

After spending years wasting away in software QA land, I just launched a glass carving and etching business focussing on my original and custom designs on glasses, vases, and (coming soon) custom glass game boards!

http://www.woodeye.com

So if you ever need anything custom made, or like my work... please let me know, and please tell others. I really want to make an honest living at this work and avoid returning to the craptastic software industry ;)

The site just went live a couple days ago, and I still have many, many new finished glass photos to load up there tonight and tomorrow, so please forgive me for some of the template images up there at the moment.

I am also adding a special coupon code for all Antiochians to use, just enter "ANTIOCH" as the code, and you will get 30% off any order. Again I am sorry for this spamish type message, but I hope you will still check out my site and let me know if I can ever carve some custom glass for you :)

Hi everyone!

Thanks for joining the Antioch tribe. I was curious, when did everyone attend Antioch, and when was the last time you were in Yellow Springs?

I was there from 1980-83. I lived in Yellow Springs for about a year after I graduated, not back since then.

cheers,

did anyone live in shepard?
I want to know how far back the tradition goes? What tradition you ask? That of madcap insanity. The year before me, (so I hear) my year, and the years after me all shared the same kind of craziness. It was tuned to different wavelengths every year, but something remained the same. My year for example, was very into decorating. Lots of cave painting syle art on the walls using gaffer's tape. Furniture elevated onto bedframes, lights turned weird colors. That and lots of broken shit everywhere. The year after me they did a whole day of silence, just to spite some dude.
what happened back in the day? Or after for that matter.

Rejecting more passive models of conferences and demonstrations, we invite you to take part in 4 days and nights of participatory, creative problem-solving to rethink how we “stage” protest. Help us turn a three-story Chicago building into a fully functioning hollywood studio, replete with fantastical sets, collaborative crews, and improvised madness.
Stage a panel discussion as a talk show, lead a workshop as a cooking show, get behind a camera, sew a costume, party all night, or just show up and get involved in the conversation. PILOT will be an open-ended space for those of us involved in the global anticapitalist movement to come together in sweat-space, build momentum, and strategize our biopolitical resistance on (and off) camera.
As the last vestiges of public space, natural resources, and community-control are bought-off, our bodies will continue to be the final line in the struggle for autonomy. Join us at the PILOT laboratory for 4 days of fleshy resistance, aesthetic experiments and tactical performance! Trespass the corporate control of media with nomadic TV, pirate radio broadcasts, and guerrilla drive-in screenings! Visit the PILOTWOOD sign and help make a “Walk of Flames”! Enjoy parties, community meals, and finish the weekend with us as we RECLAIM-THE-STREETS as an on-location shoot FOR OUR TV PILOT! Do things on camera that you could never do legally in real life!
The PILOT TV convergence is a non-hierarchical, no-budget event currently being organized by a loose collective of trans/genderqueer activists, artists, and fence-cutters. Please get involved! All resources, skill-sets, and ideas for collaboratio nare welcomed!

Mixed Media Theater?

I have an idea for mixing up scripts the way that a rapper samples music. (Has anyone seen anything like this before?) Pulling old things along with new. I have always loved music that is mixed up really well. I think that it could be done with theater as well. Especially with street theater where you rely less on the props than you do on the quality of the writing and the performances. I don't really have any experience in the theater aside from attending and reading alot of plays and attempting to write scenes from time to time.

Now I am working on a project (eventually a non-profit org) that would work in community building in the more left leaning communities. I think that using street theater would be a very powerful tool in this. One question I have is if anyone has any knowledge about copywrite issues. Would we be able to pull scenes from old movies and plays without breaking any laws? Since it would not be for profit (and would it be OK if it was for donations?) would it be legal?

Can anyone come up with good mixes that would pull in as many people as possible? I am thinking that we would need to pull things from the popular cinema and theater to get more people paying attention. Imagine blending in one of Jimmy Stewarts scenes from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with Sondhiem or something even more experimental and Avante Garde. If done right it could be amazing. But would it be LEGAL?>????

Show a progression of the american family with scenes from movies, theater and tv of the different timeperiods. Are they idyllic? Do they follow a pattern? Do we show them getting worse as time goes on? Do we show that they have always been screwed up? Mix up Long Day's Journey into Night with scenes from Leave it to Beaver. There are endless possibilities. I'm not saying that I have the writing skills to do this really well (although I will probably try at least) but we need to find a way to break through to the largest possible number of people. The project (The Open Minds Network) will help build up the liberal base inother ways be we also need to do more than just preach to the choir. We need to educate and I really think that Theater is under utilized. Not to mention that many people would not go. But if we TAKE IT TO THEM!

Let me know what you think. And if you want to get involved then stop by the REnaissance Farms tribe. (not it's not a medieval site)

Peace

I am just curious about the co-ops that were part of the school program at Antioch. My friend worked for a summer at a Maritime Museum in Maryland helping to refurbish old boats. Anyone want to share one of their co-ops and what they feel that they got out of it? I am really interested in ways that we can set up mentoring programs for kids nowadays. They need to be shown that learning something is fun.

The greatest band to come out of Antioch were The Gits. Yesterday the motherfucker that killed the lead singer of that band, Mia Zapata, was found guilty of 1st Degree Murder. Late, but some sort of justice none the less. Anyone that was at Antioch when they were there, as I was fortunate enough to be, understands the importance of this small victory against evil incarnate. Viva Zapata!

Hi there,
I am interested in applying to the Antioch located in Los Angeles (Marina Del Ray). I was wanting any and all the information you want to give me about this school! Did you enjoy it? Was it an "alternative education?" Have you gotten good jobs because you graduated from there? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather
